The Great Gastby- Fantasy Cast

Cover of "The Great Gatsby"Cover of The Great Gatsby
Who would you cast in the Great Gatsby?

I am talking, no limit on time and space.   Any actor or Actress alive or dead, old or young.  Who would you cast as Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, Nick Carraway, Jordan Baker, Tom and Myrtle Wilson.

I am sad to say I have on seen the 70's movie version.  And as much as I loved Robert Redford as Gatsby, I was disturbed by Mia Farrow as Daisy.  Not to mention all the sparkles in the eyes.  I am sorry Mia as Daisy makes my brain bleed.
Sorry, off topic....I am just curious on who you would cast.

A&E Bio- F Scott Fitzgerald-The Great American Dreamer

I was finally able to view the A&E biography on Fitzgerald.
In my opinion, whatever that is worth, is it was good.

If you do not know a lot about the man, this is a good introduction to his life.  However, if you have done any reading on his life you may be disappointed.  I don't think I learned anything new, but I wasn't irritated with the rehashing of facts.

New Penguin book covers by Coralie Bickford-Smith

I just stumbled across these.  Are they not incredible?

Designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith.  I wonder what the cost is?  I see more research is needed.
Looks like they are only available in the UK right now....Hint Hint.

Whats Next- The Great American Dreamer, Bio

I just got notification that Netflix is shipping a Bio on Fitzgerald to me to watch.

I am excited to see what I can learn.

I have read a biography or two on FSF before, but I am always interested to see what others have to say.

On the reading front. I am taking a bit of a break from reading Fitzgerald to finish another book.  I am not  great at reading multiple books at a time.  I can do it, I just don't like to.

The Offshore Pirate -Flappers and Philosphers, 1920

"This unlikely story begins on a sea that was a Blue Dream, as colorful as blue-silk stockings, and beneath a sky as blue as the irises of children's eyes."

The Offshore Pirate, a quick summary by me.

A flapper is hanging out on her uncles yacht.  She is being her spoiled little self, not caring how she effects anyone.  Her Uncle informs her that one Toby Moreland would like to visit with her.  She basically tells him she doesn't want to meet anyone, and anyways she is going to marry some muck-a-muck with a bracelet that belongs to the Queen of Russia.

Soon after, a ship rows up to the side of the yacht and out jumps a band leader named Curtis Carlyle.  He informs Ardita that he is on the run and there is a price on his head.  He commandeers the yacht and takes her on the run with him and his men.

They find their way to an uncharted island and hang out, talking and swimming in the moon light.  Here is where they fall in love.  Ardita is willing to give up the big Muck-a-Muck to run away with Carlyle, but only if he can provide for her.

Soon they are discovered.  It is here we find out the Curtis Carlyle is actually Toby Moreland.  He fabricated the whole story to see if Ardita was like she was described.  They are both happy with what they have found and in the end the love they discovered in the cove was real.

Now time for my thoughts....

I find it interesting that this story is the first "review" so to say.  I have always had a hard time knowing how I feel about this particular story.  I can easily say the writing and imagery is fantastic, and if I was only reading it for that I would give it a solid 4 (out of 5).  However, I read for story line and characters as well.  And I am sad to say this is where it falls apart for me.  I just don't care for either of the characters in this story.

Ardita, Fitzgerald's typical flapper, is manipulative and spoiled.  And honestly, I could care less what happens to her.  That is not true.  I wish she would fall overboard and just fade away.  Carlyle/Moreland, gives me a bit more pause, but in the end I don't care for him much either.  I have a hard time respecting anyone who will put in that much effort to get to know such a selfish, spoiled girl.  He does have imagination though,  I can give him that much.

In the end I could see reading this story at a beach or poolside, and being taken away by the imagery and writing.  And the nature of the story makes it a perfect summer escape.

Lets get it out there...

Image via Wikipedia
I am not an expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald, or a former English/Literature major.  In fact my writing may drive some to distraction.

I have no master plan to read all of Fitzgerald's writing in any certain order or by such and such a date.

I am just a girl who likes to read Fitzgerald, about his life and the era in which he lived.
A study of F. Scott Fitzgerald by Gordon Bryan...
Why?  I am not entirely certain I know.

It maybe he came from St. Paul, or that he looks a little like my Grandfather, or that I identify with his characters.  I don't really know and I am not really sure that it matters.

Sitting here today, my plan is to read his works in somewhat of a chronological order.  However, I want to leave room so I can deviate if needed, due to availability or desire.  I will be reading his short stories,  essays, and biographies along with his novels.  I may also include general books on the era in which he lived.

I am not new to reading F. Scott Fitzgerald.  I have read many of his works already.  I do plan on re-reading anything I have previously read and will mention when I am doing so.  I will also try to include previous feelings of those works when possible.

Basically, there is no real rhyme or reason on how this blog is going to unfold.  In the end it will be what it wants to be.

If you happen to stumble upon my humble project, please stop in and say "Hi".
